Safe Fishing
Fishing is a wonderfully relaxing outdoor activity and a few rules to keep in mind will ensure you continue to enjoy your hobby. The amount of time you spend in running a few basic checks will set your mind at ease, as well as those of your family and friends, and make for a happy trip to your favourite fishing spot.
Maintenance of your equipment will also save you dollars in the long run. Make sure your fishing equipment is checked regularly and in safe working order. Look for cracks in your rod and reel. Check that your reel operates smoothly without tangles in the line. Replace the line or get a new reel. If any of your tackle, lures or sinkers is corroding, replace them as soon as you can. Rusty equipment can increase risk of tetanus if you nick yourself. Ensure your line is suited to the type of fishing you are doing and the size of your intended catch.
Check the weather forecast and pack wet weather gear, sunscreen and UV protective clothing and appropriate footwear, depending on the season. Take plenty of water and any refreshments packed in cooler packs or thermos flasks. Also make sure you have sufficient refrigeration containers for preserving your catch on the journey home. Ensure you have cell phone coverage and tell someone where you are going, how long you plan to be away and when to expect you back. Some remote locations may warrant a personal safety beacon in case of an emergency.
Going out in a boat requires extra checks relating to the safety of the vessel, the experience and state of the boat operator, adequate and well maintained flotation devices for all those onboard, enough fuel for the return journey and a plan lodged with someone on shore. A working radio or other communication device on board will ensure a means to communicate any problems.
With any type of fishing, always take care with the casting of sharp hooks on the end of lines. Be vigilant and you’ll continue to enjoy your fishing time and concentrate on catching that big one.
